There may be a world of difference, for some people at least, between limit and no limit poker strategy. No limit is an evocative name, which in itself means a lot. Besides playing good games, understanding playing and players psychology, it also puts a strong question to you: how far can you or your opponent go into this? In most cases you would probably know your limits but it would be almost an impossible mission to have a good guess at what your opponent reserves.  Their lies the main difference between limit and no-limit poker, and from there comes a whole new set of parameters that can completely change the face of the game.

The difference between limit and no-limit strategies, on the other hand, is mostly based on position and hand value.  Now position is a thing to serious consider in a no-limit game. If served well, you can win the entire stack of your prey as compared to the pale pleasure of snatching some extra bets in a limit game. The no-limit game gives low value to big connectors like AK and AQ and you will probably win small pots and lose big ones which such cards.  Seriously enough, all pairs are highly valued as you can double through an opponent while hitting a set or you can even grab the whole stack of your opponent hitting with pairs like AA, and KK.

There are certain things, which you should absolutely avoid in a no-limit games, have a look at the list below:

  • You may lose a whole stack if you don’t release a reasonable hand when beat
  • Don’t play too many starting hands
  • Use weak hands to call against bets
  • Consequent over/under betting of the pot.

To get the best out of a game of this type, you’ve got to be disciplined, knowing where you are going and how far you can go. Why should you, for example avoid playing too many starting hands? Well in a standard $2 - $4 no-limit game, you would probably view 20-30% of the flop. So what you should really do, is folding AJ if you are in the first position, KT if you are in the middle and QT if you’re late.

It is recommended that you sit on a table where certain weak players are, giving you some comfort and self-confidence. Fold or raise, the game is simple. Call a bet if you have a valuable reason to – say for example, to trap a good prey. On turns and rivers, just respect the bets and their raises, as bluffs are rare in these kinds of games.

These are only certain basics on a no-limit poker game, assuming that you are already into the limit games and know part of your way around. Poker is a school in itself; you will only be able to get it right through learning and testing…
