Poker Star.com Review
By Marc and Kendall
Poker Stars Overview:
Pokerstars is the main online home of the 2003-2005 WSOP Main Event Champions; Chris Moneymaker, Greg Raymer, and Joseph Hachem. Other celebrities who play at Pokerstars include professional players Daniel Negreanu, Tom McEvoy, Humberto Brenes, and Barry Greenstein; along with actor Wil Wheaton.
Pokerstars is the largest online poker rooms on the internet today, and growing daily. Among the many selling points of Pokerstars is the variety, size, and amount of tournaments offered daily. Also, Pokerstars is well known for its stability and security, rarely having an issue.
Traffic:
Poker Star.com has a staggering amount of players, as they were the first online poker room to have over 100,000 players. On average, during peak hours, you can expect to see anywhere from 60,000 to 75,000 people playing nightly on Pokerstars. Among this, about 60% play tournaments with the rest filling out the ring games on the site.
Tournaments:
Pokerstars is known as THE tournament poker site, offering an enormous amount of tournaments daily, weekly, and monthly. Whether it be high stakes multi-table tournaments, freerolls, sit-n-goes, or heads up matches; Pokerstars has a tournament offering for everyone.
Pokerstars routinely qualifies and sends numerous participants to live poker tournaments including the WSOP, WPT events, EPT events, and several other land based events.
Every year they also host the World Championship of Online Poker (WCOOP) event, featuring numerous online tournaments over the course of 10-14 days. The buy-ins for these tournaments range from $215-$5,200. This year, Pokerstars is expecting a total prize pool of over $10 million U.S. dollars. The main Texas Hold’em event features a guaranteed prize pool of $3 million dollars.
Software:
Poker Stars uses proprietary custom software with a variety of features, providing a wonderfully easy and rewarding poker playing experience. The software is fast and fluid, with very few server issues and one of the best tournament information displays anywhere. A slight difference between Pokerstars and other sites however, is that Pokerstars only offers 9 player tables instead of the standard 10 player tables.
The software is colorful, with vivid graphics, sharp contrast, and large cards and chips. There are only a few customizable options though. Among them are the ability for a player to upload a picture to use as an avatar, the ability to select a 4 color deck, and the recently added functionality to resize tables.
The software offers a variety of game types: Texas Hold’em, Omaha High, Omaha High/Low, 7 Card Stud High, 7 Card Stud High/Low, along with the recently added Razz and HORSE.
The lobby is easy to navigate, and it is very easy to find any game you are looking for, at any level of stakes. The statistical information that is collected is mind-boggling, with Pokerstars having one of the most extensive stats collectors of any online poker site.
The note taking ability is a quick and efficient way to keep track of your routine opponents.
Competition:
Even with the amount of players on the site the competition level at Poker Star.com varies significantly. At the lower limits, it is easy to find numerous lesser skilled players and ‘fish’. However, at levels of $2/$4 and above, the competition (generally) improves drastically, providing a more challenging playing experience.
Security:
Poker Stars is based out of a reputable haven for online gaming sites – Costa Rica. They are registered as a legal business in the capital of San Jose, where they abide by all the rules and conditions set forth by the country.
The encryption algorithms used at Poker Stars are provided by Thawte, who have handled data security for a number of years and are known as reputable leader in the industry. Each player’s account balance is held in an individual account at the Royal Bank of Scotland, with none of this money being accessible for Pokerstars to use for site operations or on their on whim.
The Random Number Generator used at Pokerstars has been verified time and time again from independent sources, and has been shown to be completely random and secure.
Pokerstars claims to use a system of collusion detection that allows it to pinpoint suspicious behavior almost immediately and eliminate players who cheat or use other methods to gain an advantage.
Support:
Poker star.com only offers e-mail support, with questions being answered around the clock 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. They lack telephone or online live chat support, but do offer a FAQ section on their website in regards to more common questions or issues that occasionally arise.
E-mails are answered promptly and with detail, providing all the information you may need to get any issue resolved in a timely fashion.
Deposits/Withdrawal:
For depositing, Pokerstars offers the following options:
US Deposit Options: Visa, Mastercard, eChecks, Epassporte, Diners Club, Western Union, Cash Transfer Express Payment, Money Order Cashiers Check
Outside US: Neteller, Instant eChecks, Visa, Mastercard, Diner’s Club, Delta, Solo & Maestro (UK and Northern Ireland), FPS, Online Bank Transfer, Local Bank Transfer, moneybookers, EC Elv (Germany) , UseMyBank (canda and UK only) and PaySafeCard
