Common types of low limit tables

3/6 – Blinds are $1 and $3

5/10 – Blinds are $2 and $5

Usually the house takes a rake of the pot. Make sure to note how much they rake from the pot. These are your winnings going to the casino.

Betting (3/6 tables)

Before the flop you have to bet a minimum of $3 or you can raise the bet to $6 to see the flop. After the flop, turn and river you have the option to check or bet $6. Because the flop is only $3, many players choose to buy the flop.

Avoid buying the flop

You will notice that many players will pay the $3 to buy the flop. Their train of thought is that they have three chances to get a pair for only $3. Often times if you raise the hand to $6, they will still pay to see the flop. This becomes very costly for the player that will constantly buy a flop and is a way to win a lot of money for you. If you want to win big pots, look for these type of players at the table. The players that buy a flop are trying to improve their hand because they are either unsure that it is a good hand, or they hope to get lucky. It is very rare that they will get lucky but sometimes they do. However, it can become very costly for the player if they improve their hand and still do not have the best hand. Often times you can assume what type of hand this type of player has, since they are “fishing for a pair”, and can determine if you have the better hand. Do not buy flops often as it can quickly become a losing strategy. At these tables if you play tight, and only play good hands, you will walk away with more money then you started with.

Bet every chance you can

If you want a large pot and are confident you have a winning hand, bet $6 before the flop. If you bet every chance you can, often times it will scare someone out of the pot if they are unsure that they have the best hand. However, be wary if the flop lands a possible straight or flush for the other players. This is rare, but don’t become fixated in thinking you will win. Most of these players are playing to get lucky and sometimes they do. See my article, “Laying down a big hand,” for more information on fixation.

How to Bluff

If there are 8+ people at the table, only play good hands. Every two or three rounds play a hand that is questionable. If there are 5 or less people at the table you have a better chance to bluff as many people will not play beyond the flop if a bet is involved. If you have a good hand, or are bluffing bet every chance you can get and a majority of the time you will end up with the win.

This is not a “No Limit” Poker Table

This is a stark contrast to the strategy at a No Limit table. Many people will come to these tables and play like they see people playing on TV or like they play at home with their buddies only to lose $100 within an hour. By following the instructions in this article you can successfully double your money in a short period of time. Good Luck!
