A former bankruptcy attorney, he had actually started playing poker for the fun of it, and since then, has been winning many poker tournaments.

Since starting to play poker, he has won the main event of the World Series of Poker once in 1995. His had won $1,000,000 then, and since then has sat at three other finals. He then turned out 6th in 1997, 3rd in 2003 and 4th in 2004. He had also won a bracelet in 1995 for a no-limit hold’em event and the seven-card stud at European Poker in London.

Don Harrington plays poker with his symbolic, green Boston Red Sox cap. He is known to be a crafty, tight and aggressive player whose starting hand standards are stricter than many. It is his capacity in reading opponents that helps him win tournaments. When winning in 1995, he was the least expected winner. He won by managing to bluff the runner up for all his chips in the final hand. Before actually starting the game that year, he had actually proposed a nine-way settlement wherein all players would receive enough money to invest and strike it rich.

However, Chuck Thompson was the one who had rejected this idea, saying that that tournament was a once in a lifetime opportunity for making a million dollars. Subsequently, each player was eliminated. However, Dan still tried to offer investment counseling but to no takers. This finally led with him walking away with the full million dollars.

Dan Harrington is basically a conservative player who plays fewer hands and usually folds if he finds another player making a larger bet. It was this conservative attitude of his that had helped him make it to final tables at large poker events. He has made it to the final tables at large events like the 2003 WSOP where there were 829 players and the 2004 WSOP where there were 2576 players. However, it was in 2005 that he made it to his final table at the World Poker Tour to end up second with a winning of $620,730.

Besides playing poker, and being a successful and professional poker player, Dan Harrington also works in the stock market and real estate. In addition to all this, he has also written three popular books on tournament poker.
