Antigua May Use Ruling to Target US Copyright
May 23, 2007 on 11:32 pm | In Online Poker Play, Poker News |Antigua has begun to look for more countries to join them in targeting the US. The reason a small country in the Caribbean nation is taking on the US is because the US is not willing to comply with a recent WTO ruling. The WTO ruled in favor of Antigua citing the US for not following global trade rules. With the passage of the UIGEA the US has recently shut out foreign online gambling establishments. This would not be a problem if the US stopped all online gambling transactions. The problem is in the UIGEA bill there are carve outs for US companies to offer online lotto and online horse racing. With the carve outs in the bill it does not follow the rules of the GATS treaty which regulates trade rules and is upheld by the WTO.
The US appealed and lost the case and recently have taken the position that the US will not follow the ruling. Allowing Antigua and other nations the right to seek compensation from the US. Antigua has now threatened to not follow American trademarks, copyrights.
