The event was played at the Bay 101 card room in San Jose, California.  The tournament was played March 10-14th with a $10k buy-in. Brandon Cantu beat a final table consisting of Jennifer Harman, John Phan, Steve Sung, Mike Baker,  Noah Jefferson.

376 players entered the tournament with Cantu taking home $1,000,000 dollars. Brandon Cantu had a large chip lead going into the final table and never looked back. He also won over $400,000 dollars in bounties and was able to dominate the table even with the small blinds.

The winning hand of the tournament was when Cantu won with pocket 5’s against Steve Sung’s pocket 4’s.

Gavin Griffen bested a field of over 500 players and won in heads up play against David Tran.

The final hand of the poker tournament was Griffen with Jc-Qs against Tran’s Ks-8s. The flop was 9d-Ac-8d. Which Tran was in the lead but for a short time as the turn was a Qd. The river was a 10d and was no help to Tran who took second place and received $737,685.

The final 9 players at the final table in order of their finish was: Gavin Griffin, David Tran, Thomas Hare,Noah Schwartz,Lee Watkinson,Ervin Prifiti,Shane LaBounty,Justin Bonomo and Scott Blackman.

This is not the first big score for Gavin Griffen has also won events at the World Series of Poker and the European Poker Tour.

The buy-in to the event is $10,000 and is being played at the Borgota Hotel and Casino in Atlantic City. The event started with 501 players with 1st place taking home a $1.4 million dollars.

Notables that have been eliminated are: Mike Matusow, Jamie Gold, Ted Forrest, Barry Greinstein and Steven Dannenmann.

The 2008 WSOP will have 55 events and will begin on May 30 and run through July 16th. The World Series of Poker is the largest poker tournament in the world and has been running annually for 39 years.

Harrah’s has announced that they will not be hosting any of the WSOP tables in their casino tent. This was a hot topic in the 2007 WSOP because players were unhappy with the conditions in the WSOP tent. Jeffrey Pollack (WSOP commisioner) was quick to point out in the press release that they heard players concerns and will make sure no tables are played outside a casino.

It is a world poker tour event that will be shown on TV in the upcoming months.  The final table was set yesterday and the final table has yet to play but will include popular poker pro John Juanda who sits last in the chip count with 425,000.

They are claiming that the release forms that players have to sign are anti-competitive and violate contracts that they have signed with sponsors. Recently they were denied the motion for summary judgment which they had asked for when they filed a reply briefing to the WPTE’s Opposition to Plaintiffs’ Motion. It looks like the players will have to keep fighting this and will not get a quick judgment for the case.

Layla is 23, she has been a correspondent for best damn sports show, the vegas insider and G4 TV. She will appear in the 4th season of the world poker tour that will begin airing in early 2008. Time will tell if she will be able to fill the shoes of Shana Hiatt who has been the WPT host for the last three seasons. Shana signed early this year to host the poker tv show “poker after dark”.

They attributed the loss because they sold fewer World Poker Tour episodes this year. They posted a $2.3 million dollar loss or 11 cents per share. Could the loss of the WPT earnings be party because of the UIGEA? When they lost sponsors like Party Poker and many others poker rooms who have decided to focus on the international market. This would make the show harder to sell the with many of the old advertisers not willing to pay for advertising time. Will the WSOP also feel the sponsorship loss this year?
